Raised in a musical family in Friesland, in the north of the Netherlands, Mary Ember grew up with music as a constant presence. In her bedroom, she learned guitar by covering songs from artists like Taylor Swift and others, slowly building the foundation for her own writing.
Alongside her musical path, Mary pursued a master’s degree in international biodiversity policy — a “plan B” that ultimately deepened her perspective on the world, but never replaced her creative drive. After completing her studies, Mary returned fully to what had always been there: music.
The name Ember reflects a creative fire that has always been present: steady, smoldering, and now fully lit. Her music is an extension of that idea — something small but alive, capable of spreading warmth and light.
Lyrically, she explores themes of belonging, uncertainty, and the search for place in the world, often balancing introspection with honesty and humor. On stage, Mary performs mostly solo, but also appears with small or full band setups depending on the setting.
